Virtual ISSessions Meeting on 2020-03-27

Hello everyone. These last few weeks have resulted in a large change for everyone with things being postponed and cancelled. In order to make up for lost time, we’re going to try our first ISSessions virtually! Here’s the agenda for this coming Friday:

Date: 2020-03-27
Time: 19:00 – 21:00
Location: VIRTUAL (Discord + Youtube)

Agenda
19:00 – Announcements with Louai
19:10 – News Roundup with Nick and Adam
19:40 – Project Den with the Courageous Costa Kavidas (@CK)
20:15 – Kahoot InfoSec Trivia + Jackbox Party!!
20:25 – Remote Wrap and refreshments (across the living room in the kitchen)

For this Friday, we’ll have a news roundup with Nick and Adam, a Project Den presentation with Costa Kavidas, then we’ll end the night with a fun Kahoot InfoSec Trivia + Jackbox Party! As mentioned before, this meeting will be streamed on Youtube! Then we’ll do the InfoSec Trivia + Jackbox Party using Discord 😀

Costa Kavidas is an IFS student at Seneca College, interested in Threat Hunting, Digital Forensics & Incident Response, as well as Security Engineering. When it comes to learning different technical skills and experimenting with new technologies nothing is more valuable than a home lab. In this talk Costa will describe what a home lab is, what you need to get started, and some example use cases for your homelab.

Stay safe, stay toasty and most importantly, see you this Friday!

ISSessions Meeting on 2020-03-06

With reading week now over and the tail-end of exams finishing, I hope you all are excited for our CTF next week! We have a meeting this week with the following agenda:

Date: 2020-03-06
Time: 19:00 – 21:15
Location: Room J102, Sheridan Trafalgar Campus, Oakville

Agenda
7:00-7:10: Annoucements with Louai
7:10-7:45: Guest Speaker: Owen Cummings
7:45-9:15: How-To-CTF Special Segment with @rick, @Brandon , @Louai

First, we’ll start with off with guest speaker, Owen Cummings (@ev0c), speaking about Election Security and then use the rest of the meeting preparing you all for our ISSessionsCTF2020 occurring next week.

Leading up to and during the 2019 federal election Owen, a third year student, worked as a security analyst with Elections Canada. Working on the front lines Owen has gained a unique perspective of the issues impacting modern elections. As governments continue to invest in security, threat actors have been looking for new ways to compromise and influence foreign nations. One of the latest trends on the rise is interference in the democratic and electoral process. What do attackers target when attempting to influence a large scale election? How has this occurred in the past? What does any of this have to do with information security? This talk will attempt to address some of these questions and more!

How-To-CTF Special Segment:

We’ll be going over how you can get the most out of ISSessionsCTF2020! I would highly recommend everyone who is signed up for the CTF to attend. This will be a fun meeting where we’ll give you some CTF challenges to work on so you can get in the groove!

We’ll also go over:
– Flag Format
– Game Rules & Day Logistics
– CTF Strategy, Tips, and Tricks – Challenge Walkthroughs with Brandon & Louai

Please refer the Discord server where you can find a new practice challenge to help you prepare for the CTF.

Big Thrills, Bigger Events

Good morning everyone,

As midterms approach, we also have many BIG TICKET events coming up. This post should serve as a good reference for dates and times – it will be updated as more details come to light! First, two things to arrive in the near future:

1. Please watch the Discord announcements this week and next week. There will be a lot of announcements concerning ISSessionsCTF2020 on March 14 @ Trend Micro Office in Toronto. Spots are limited. You will want to be well-informed on any news and information surrounding the event. Additionally, forming teams of 4 might be beneficial in the long run. Registration opens on Monday Feb 17. And please I humbly ask you to register only if you are 110% sure you will attend. The Eventbrite link + a detailed breakdown of event day will be posted on Friday.

2. For those unaware, Lee Kagan had some unforeseen difficulties on our original planned date. We are happy to announce that the Command and Control workshop has been rescheduled to Feb 28 8:30AM-5:00PM with the pre-workshop setup happening on Feb 27, 7:00-9:00PM. There is a new Eventbrite so kindly register again! Food (likely pizza/coffee/snacks) will be provided!

You can register for that specific event here:
